Decorating our property is a chance for us to show off our personality, and to demonstrate just how creative, how resourceful and how stylish we are to our visitors. This should be an outward expression of who we are and our personalities and it should be a form of expression that allows guests to instantly learn something about us.
As such one of the best ways to decorate your home is with home-made items that you’ve made from repurposed objects and parts you had lying around. This demonstrates your creativity and your ingenuity and it’s a great conversation point that is bound to impress. At the same time though, this way you will be able to create something that’s completely unique and that no one else with have and this is a much better way to show people who you are. After all, you’re unique aren’t you?
Of course if you use my ideas here for your creation then this will somewhat defeat the object of creating something that’s distinctively ‘you’ and that expresses who you are. However that doesn’t mean that a few of these suggestions can’t get you in the right mind set and help to give you some ideas. Here are a few suggestions.
Lampshades are something great you can make yourself because they’re dotted all around your home without being too large or too difficult to construct. If you want to add a few touches of personality then these are easy installs. Some ideas include using old pots and pans (as long as the lamps can take the weight), using material from your clothes or furniture, or even using card and cutting shapes into it to let the light through in more decorative manners.
There are all kinds of things you can use to make little coffee tables too. For instance you can take something like a suitcase and then just attach four wooden legs to it, and then you have a small table that will also provide you with additional storage.
Alternatively you could also use anything meanwhile that’s already the right height for a coffee table, and by taking it out of its normal environment you can instantly make it stand out and look more unique and interesting. An old washing machine for instance will give your home a real bohemian feel and be just the right height for standing drinks.
Likewise there are many ways you can easily make your own chairs. I’ve seen plenty of piled up cushions with blankets thrown over them, and another exciting way to do this is to take a chair you own and then do some re-upholstery. There’s nothing to stop you from using your clothes to re-upholst a chair and this will be a much more interesting way to create a more interesting looking chair that’s also very comfortable to sit on.
And then there are the additions you can make that don’t necessarily have to fit a role but are rather there simply for the hell of it. Of course these are even easier to create as they don’t need to be functional in the same way. Examples of unusual arty items you can create yourself include things like melted bottles and crushed cans which make a great statement but anyone can make.
